George S. Nimmo, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away surrounded by his family on September 29, 2016 at Sunrise Senior Living at Pinehurst. He was 93 years old. George was known as a fair-minded, protective and strong individual with a quick sense of humor where sarcasm was seldom spared. He was dedicated to his role as head of the family and as provider, always showing that his number one priority was taking care of his family. George was highly motivated and intelligent, graduating from high school at the age of 16 as Class President. He had a rapier wit that would oftentimes result in him ""telling it like it is."" He had no problem sharing his opinion so it was fortunate that he was well respected and his opinion was usually on target, providing those he cared about with stability, support and always, his best intentions. George was born on June 18, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey and grew up with his grandmother, Minnie Franklin Selleck, mother, Blanche Selleck Nimmo, his uncle, Guy Selleck and his sister, Florence Nimmo (Peterson). In high school George excelled on the track team specializing in the quarter mile and was part of the Mile Relay team that won the High School National Championship at the 1939 Penn Relays. He was also a cheerleader in the fall. George joined the Army in 1943 as a Radar Operator (Tech 5) and was stationed in Central Europe, North Africa and finally in Germany as part of the Allied occupation. He was honorably discharged in 1945 earning a Good Conduct medal and a Victory medal. Upon returning home he finished college at the University of Virginia and studied Mathematics at Columbia University as a graduate student. He began his 38 year career at the Prudential Insurance Company, ultimately retiring as the President/CEO of Prudential Reinsurance Company. George married his forever wife, Mardell Aune Nimmo, on February 12, 1954. After retirement, George and Mardee had a rich social life filled with an abundance of travel. In fact, one of George's proudest moments was, when traveling in France, he was asked to raise the flag at Normandy American Cemetery. George is survived by his four children (and their spouses), George A. Nimmo, Nancy (Theodore) Doherty, Leslie (Michael) O'Byrne, Laurie (Ezequiel) Ramirez. He also had nine grandchildren, Sebastian, Austin, Gerard and Connor Doherty; Ashley, Sarah and Claire O'Byrne; and Mardell and Ezequiel (Zeke) Ramirez. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Senior Living at Pinehurst for their genuine loving care for both George and Mardee. Their patience, understanding and ability to build a trusting relationship with George were foundational to his happiness. In addition, as with Mardee, they provided the immediate family with the peace of mind knowing he was a welcomed addition to their family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org. Please share your memories of George and offer condolences to his family by signing the guestbook below.
