George Southern, 70, passed away peacefully at St. Anthony Hospital after a long three year battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sue; daughter Denise (Jarrod) Walker; sons, Patrick and Michael Southern. He is also survived by his loving brothers, Dan (Julie) Southern and Neil Southern;four grandchildren: Kory, Derek, Shanna and Lyndsey; and two great brothers-in-law: Rick (Son, Chris) and Eddy Johnson, plus many loving family members and friends. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, 6673 West Chatfield Ave, Littleton, CO on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 10:30AM with interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery. George was born on 10/27/44 and while growing up in South Denver, learned at a very young age â while working in Soda Shops, the value of saving money, working hard and providing for his mother, siblings and family. He attended Denver Public Schools and graduated from South Denver High School in 1962 (Jonny Reb). While in these teenage years both George and his brother, Dan, crafted, found and perfected a love for working on and racing Nationally in Class AA Altered Fuel, Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Top Fuel Funny Car Drag Racing Series. George served faithfully in the United States Navy from 1965-1968. Upon returning from overseas service, he entered and passed certification, classification and entered into classified services in 1968 as a First Grade Denver Fire Fighter. He then graduated from AA Fire and Science Technology at C.C. of Denver College in 1972. Then in 1978 he was promoted to Lieutenant and studied for further tests, and boards. He was promoted to Captain in 1986 at Station 12 where he would faithfully and honorably work before retiring after 35 wonderful years of DFF Civil Service. George also served as acting District Six Chief and acting District Seven Chief respectfully from 2001-2004 before retiring on 2/1/2004 at Station 28's. George was a very accomplished and avid golfer, bowler, fisherman, hunter, Harley Biker and a man of many project developments. While retired, George served as Retired Fire Fighters President for Denver/ West Metro Chapters. While in his retirement years, Dad enjoyed cruzing in his polished and pristine 1962 Chevy Impala SS409 and blazed on top of his Harley motor cycle all over the US and Canada. George will be dearly missed and remembered by many loving family members and awesome friends who knew out Fire Captain and the biggest Denver Broncos Football Fan ever.
