George Dietz Fry

1948 — January 1, 2022

George Dietz Fry or “Popeye” was born in Upstate New York, graduated from Williams College and earned an MBA from Cornell University.  He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ahearn, in Rochester, New York and they married in 1972.  Shortly thereafter, when Dietz realized it was possible to ski and golf on the same day in Colorado, they moved to Denver. After starting his career in elementary education, he focused on finance and accounting, initially with Deloitte & Touche. He then served as the Director of Finance with Castle Pines, enjoying the perks associated with the PGA tour. He later found his niche, transitioning to a career in minerals and mining, serving as Company Controller or VP of Finance for four companies headquartered in Colorado. He timed his retirement with the birth of his 4th grandson in 2018. Dietz had an engaging personality and was quick to make friends, typically through humor.  He also shared his love of sports with his friends and family.  He taught his kids and grandchildren tennis, basketball and ping pong and immensely enjoyed time with his friends on the tennis courts.  He learned to ski, initially to impress Elizabeth, an avid skier.  Together, Dietz and Elizabeth, taught their kids a love of skiing in the Colorado mountains and their grandkids continue that legacy.  They have five grandsons, ages 10, 8, 7, 4 and 1. The grandsons have rotated through their home of 40 years, on nearly a daily basis for the last 10 years, bringing joy and occasional tears, but always noise.  Dietz is survived by his lovely wife, Elizabeth, his daughter Katie Peterson (Brad), his son Dietz (Theresa), his sister Sally Morgens (Jim) and grandsons Dietz, Kientz, Cole, Chase and Cody.  Dietz passed away in August 2022 surrounded by his family at Pikes Peak while celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary.

On Friday September 16th, funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (8035 S Quebec St, Centennial, CO 80112), where Dietz and Elizabeth have been parishioners for forty years.  The Mass will start at 11am and a Reception will start at approximately 12pm (an optional Rosary will be observed at 1015am).  In lieu of flowers, the family would love you to consider a donation in Dietz’s name to your favorite Colorado charity or The Colorado Youth Tennis Foundation at https://www.coloradogives.org/coloradotennis/overview .

For those who are unable to attend the service in person, you may join via livestream at the following link - https://youtu.be/n9tuS6xxN3k
