Georgia Leona Bigum

May 17, 1922 — January 23, 2012

Georgia L. Bigum, 89, of Grand Junction, Colorado died January 23, 2012, with her family by her side in Denver, Colorado. Georgia (or Porge, as she came to be known to those closest to her) was born May 17, 1922, in Rutledge, Missouri to Raymond and Beulah Jantzen. She moved with her family to Pritchett, Colorado. Following hard times during the Great Depression, the family moved and settled in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It was in Glenwood Springs that Georgia met and married Haines Bigum on June 13, 1943. Immediately following the marriage they moved to Virginia where Haines began his service as a naval officer during World War II. After the war they returned to Colorado to begin raising a family. The majority of their married life were spent as residents of Grand Junction. Georgia's interests were not limited to her family, her gardening, or her sewing. She was a consummate craftswoman. Most of her life she made the centerpieces, greeting cards, party favors, and more for many family parties. The last six years, she focused that creativity and love, into her time and energy as a caregiver to her husband until her death. Mrs. Bigum is survived by her husband of 69 years, Haines, a sister, Delia Boyd-Robertson, two sons and their spouses, William (Bill) and Carla Bigum, Robert (Bob) and Geri Bigum. They are also survived by three grandchildren, Gina Eck, Spencer Bigum, and Margot Bigum; one step-granddaughter, Sarah Dukes; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, one sister and one step grand-child. Funeral arrangements have been made with Horan & McConaty, 1091 South Colorado Boulevard of Denver for February 4, 2012 at 1:30 PM. Donations may be sent to VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, 7887 E. Belleview Ave., Suite 1100, Englewood, CO 80111. Please share your memories of Georgia and condolences with her family by selecting the ""sign guestbook"" option below.
