Born in 1926 to Elsie and Robert Potter, Gladys grew up in north Denver where she attended Columbine Elementary, Skinner Middle School and North High School. After graduation, she moved on to the University of Denver where she met her future husband, Bill. They were married on July 3, 1948. In June of 1949, they welcomed the first of their two children, daughter Jan, followed three years later by son, Bill, in 1952. After Jan and Bill went to school, Gladys began her 26 year teaching career as a first grade teacher, where she began shaping the minds of her many students. She began teaching at McMeen Elementary, but also taught at Fallis Elementary and Smith Elementary. Since many of her students moved on to George Washington HS, where her husband, Bill, taught and coached, she took great delight in finding those former students and showing them their first grade class picture. Her extended family included the GW basketball team. Many team members were invited over to the Weimar household where Gladys would challenge them to games of ping pong and fix dinners for them. Gladys loved sports, especially basketball, and weekends would find her at her husband, Bill's basketball games. She attended 46 straight state basketball tournaments. Until her advancing dementia prevented it, she could always be found on the floor level, visiting with coaches, officials, friends, neighbors, former and current athletes, and anyone who might want to visit with her, something everyone who knew her thoroughly enjoyed doing. One of her favorite nights came when she was on hand to accept her late husband's induction into the Colorado High School Activities Association's Hall of Fame. She took great pride in the success of both of her children as Jan followed in her footsteps and became an educator and Bill became a dentist. She passed on her love of athletics to both of her kids who still love the high school sports environment. In addition to her children, Gladys was blessed with two wonderful granddaughters, Heidi Weimar Mockerman and Lindy Weimar Emmerson. When Heidi and Lindy entered elementary school, they had the wonderful opportunity to spend one night a week with their Oma, beginning a long-lasting, loving and close relationship. And, her two granddaughters will keep great-Oma's memory alive for her great-grandchildren, Maizy and Luke Mockerman who, as they get older, will definitely know how wonderful she was. Family was very important to her, so for many years after her husband, Bill, passed away, she would cook dinner for the entire family every Thursday night. Although her dementia first took her short-term memory, then her long-term memory, she never lost her cheerful smile and delightful personality. Those who worked with her enjoyed her company immensely and visitors were always welcomed with a wink and a ready smile. In her presence, no one was ever a stranger. Family and friends will always remember her for that special smile and a great gift of gab. Children should always defer to their parents, so when our mom told us that she didn't want a memorial service, but instead wanted a fun party, we agreed. So, here we go. Jan Anderson and Bill Weimar invite you to attend a casual celebration at one of mom's favorite watering holes, Piccolo's, where she spent many an evening sitting at the bar visiting the staff and patrons. Please join us as we return to that special location for a final celebration of this very special mother's life. We look forward to sharing many fond memories with the many friends who crossed her path during her lifetime. When: Saturday, June 4, which would have been mom's 90th birthday, 11:00-2:00 pm at Piccolo's, 3563 S Monaco Pkwy, Denver, CO 80237. Attire: casual.
