Goldie Evelyn Gilbert, 98, of Englewood, formerly of Buena Vista, passed from this life on January 20, 2014, at the Englewood Meridian. Born December 19, 1915 in Buena Vista, CO, she was the daughter of Bertha Eulalia Sebring and Zephere Joseph Beauregard. Goldie attended a one-room schoolhouse in grades 1-4, and later graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1933. She attended Western State College in Gunnison for 2 years where she earned her teaching credentials. This is where she met her future husband, Richard Lynn ""Dick"" Gilbert, but didn't date him until 1941, when she reconnected with him in San Luis Valley where they were both teaching. They eloped to Raton, New Mexico, marrying June 16, 1941. As part of the Occupation Forces, they lived in Japan from 1946 – 1948. Upon returning, they settled in Maryland where they raised their two daughters. In 1981, they retired to Buena Vista, where they lived for nearly 30 years. Goldie was active in the Buena Vista Congregational United Church of Christ, including the Church Choir and Women's Group. She was an avid gardener and a great cook, passing on secret family recipes for preserves and jellies to her family. She was active in the women's hiking group for many years, as well as a member of the Republican Women's club. She and Dick were participants in Habitat for Humanity, traveling near and far to build homes for those in need. While in Buena Vista, Goldie and Dick celebrated their 50th and 65th wedding anniversaries with friends and family. They moved to Englewood, CO to be near their younger daughter and her family in December of 2010. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June of 2011. Goldie will be remembered for her warm, welcoming spirit, her beautiful smile, her love of wildflowers and birds, and especially her love of music. She is survived by her husband Dick; her daughters Karen (Robert) Haydock of Corte Madera, CA, Eugenie ""Genie"" (Frank) Coppola of Englewood; granddaughters Kara (Jason) Schmahl of Lone Tree, CO, Kate (Billy) Leiva of Hermosa Beach, CA, Kacey (Rossi) Morreale of Hermosa Beach; great-grandson James Joseph Schmahl, and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will begin 11:00 AM Saturday, followed by a funeral service at 11:30, both at Buena Vista Congregational United Church of Christ, 217 Crossman Ave., Buena Vista. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista. Memorials may be made to the Buena Vista Congregational United Church of Christ P.O. Box 610 Buena Vista, Colorado 81211.
