Our beloved mother Grace Stewart Stanton passed away September 24, 2023. Her amazing life will be celebrated with love and laughter by her daughter, Lori, her son-in-law Mike, her three granddaughters, Amy (husband Jake), Lindsey (husband Kyle), Sarah (husband Connor), and Gracie's four great grandchildren, Isaac, Madeleine, Patrick, and Kennedy. She will also be deeply missed by her sister, Janie, her brother, George, and their extended families. She was preceded in death by two of her children, Doug and Leslie, two of her brothers, Gibby and Dave, and her special friend, Gordon Langley.
Grace was born June 7, 1933, in Menominee, Michigan to Calvin G. Stewart and Elizabeth Gosnell Stewart. "Gracie," the oldest of five children, grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. Education was always a part of her life. A graduate of Cottey College and Auburn University, she followed her mother's footsteps and taught first grade. She was a devoted and loving mother to her children, Doug, Lori, and Leslie. In 1966, Chillicothe became her home for 47 years. In 1972, She embarked on her remarkable 30 year teaching career, working with middle school students with learning challenges. She adored her students and truly believed every child could be successful.
Her compassion, humor, and unique teaching methods were recognized in 1992 when Chillicothe Schools presented her with the Charles A. Smart Award. Grace was also honored in 2002 when she was awarded the prestigious Ohio Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award. Grace was a hero to many of her students, and in 2004 received the American Red Cross Hero Award.
After a hard day of teaching, Grace would find energy to spend time with her cherished friends. She was an avid bridge player and a fabulous cook. She was either baking sweet treats or making her famous vegetable soup for someone in need. She was an active and devoted member of Walnut Street Methodist Church for 45 years and a 50 plus year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. (Chapters DQ, EH, Ohio and GZ, Colorado).
In 2013 Grace moved to the beautiful mountains of Colorado to be near her daughter Lori and family where she spread her special joy at Wind Crest Senior Living Community. Grace was known for her radiant smile and her competitive games of bridge and Uno. Her favorite trip was to Lake Martin, Alabama to spend precious time with her siblings at the cottage on Piney Point.
An "Amazing Grace" celebration of life will be held at Lori and Mike's home in Littleton, Colorado on October 15. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Walnut Street United Methodist Church or to P.E.O. International.
