Grace Thompson passed away peacefully on the evening of September 10, 2023 at the age of 98, in Longmont, CO. Grace was at the heart of a large family, survived by her five children, Shawn (Carrie), Kevin (Linda), Shannon (James), Colleen (Steve), and Elizabeth (Matt); 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Grace was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third of six children. After losing both her parents at a relatively young age, Grace and her siblings were raised by their grandmother and her sister. Following her high school graduation in 1943, Grace met Roger Thompson, a Master electrician. They worked together at Champion Electric and were soon married and began spending their time together traveling and working throughout the western US. During their travels through California, Nevada, Arizona, and Washington, they had four children, Shawn, Kevin, Shannon, and Colleen, before deciding to settle permanently in Denver in 1963 and having their fifth child, Elizabeth.
Following her retirement, Grace enjoyed spending her time helping her family and community. She volunteered for over 30 years at the gift shop in Fort Logan Mental Hospital, regularly scouring Merchandise Mart for only the best items for the gift shop patrons. She was also active in the Red Hat Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Grace's love of the outdoors led her to join the American Volksmarch Association. Through this, she traveled across the US participating in walks in many varied locations with a variety of different people.
Family was very important to Grace. Using her legendary lead foot, she quickly traversed the Denver Metro Area and beyond to attend all manner of birthdays, games, graduations, concerts, and holiday celebrations. Her family extended to her many Boston Terriers, who were her constant companion for almost 50 years.
Grace's love for her family and her Boston Terriers was only matched by her affection for Roy Rogers and cowboys. Her children and many grandchildren will hold dear the fond memories of watching Gunsmoke on repeat with cowboy memorabilia surrounding them. A life size cutout of Roy Rogers watched over and protected Grace's home in Englewood for over 50 years as she raised her children and many dogs.
She leaves behind many, many family and friends who loved her and were loved dearly.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 21, at All Saints Catholic Church, 2559 S. Federal Blvd., Denver, CO 80219. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Grace's name be made to the MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue, adoptaboston.com, or the Rocky Mountain 501c, rmconservancy.org.
