Guy Dean Dodd

November 27, 1929 — August 7, 2011

Guy Dean Dodd was born November 27, 1929 in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Anna and John Dodd. He passed away in Denver, Colorado on August 7, 2011. Guy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Birdie Jewel and his brothers: Wayne, Lee Vaughn and John; and sisters Lillian, Rita, Ruth and Thelma. He is survived by his sister, Juanita Fanshier, and his five children, four grandchildren and two great-children. Guy and Birdie were married 63 years. They spent a lifetime richly blessed with family and friends. He and Birdie will be deeply missed by their children: Cheryl Dodd of Colorado; Jeff Dodd and his fiancé Theresa, also of Colorado; Greg Dodd, who lives in Florida with Beverly Evenson; Jason Dodd of Colorado; and Janan Smith, who lives in Colorado with her husband, Jim. Guy's grandchildren are: Kristy Metheney, who lives in Missouri with her husband, Mason; Nicole Reynolds, who lives in California with her husband, Josh; Kristopher Caldwell, who lives in Colorado; and Shane Dodd, who also lives in Colorado. Guy's great-grandchildren are Hunter and Madux Metheney, of Missouri. Guy leaves behind many loving relatives and friends from Oklahoma, where he grew up and spent the early years of his marriage and career. Guy graduated from Merritt High School in 1948. Baseball was a favorite pastime of his and he was an accomplished pitcher in his day. Prior to moving to Denver in 1957, Guy worked as a pressman at a local Oklahoma City newspaper, and received a certificate from a technical trade school in an apprentice pressman correspondence course. While in Colorado he spent his career at the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post. In the middle of this, he and Birdie decided to try their hand at the restaurant business and bought one and packed up the family and moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma, to give it a go. They found the draw of Colorado to be too much and moved back. He was also a graduate from the Denver Institute of Technology for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration servicing. His love of cooking never left Guy, however, and he fine-tuned his art of grilling over the years at countless union picnics with one of his best friends at his side, Leroy. He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks Lodge and Fraternal Order of Masons. Guy also loved the outdoors and passed this love on to his children and grandchildren during many camping, fishing and hunting trips. He also loved flea markets and spent many Sundays with his children and friends selling treasures and finding many more. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, from 12-8 PM. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 10 AM, both at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Boulevard, Denver. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
