Gwendolyn “Gwen” M. Thayer September 9, 1933 - September 10, 2017 Born in Rapid City, SD Resided in Aurora, CO Gwendolyn M Thayer, 84, a long time resident of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on September 10, 2017. She was born September 9, 1933 to Kenneth H. and Pearl M. Uran in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was the youngest of three children, and always said she had the most wonderful childhood. In high school, she was very active in Student Council, Band, Drama Club, Biology Club, Pep Club, Quill and Scroll, and the yearbook staff. She was a varsity cheerleader and played the clarinet. She attended Cornell College in Iowa her freshman year and transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where she graduated in 1955 with a BS in Business Administration. In high school, she met the love of her life, Bill Thayer, whom she married in August 1955. They moved to Denver, Colorado where they became parents of triplets, Barbara, Brenda and Brad in 1958 and Steven six years later. She began her career as an underwriter for New York Life Insurance, and then moved into Risk Management for Farm Credit Corp, Forest Oil Corp., and Hamilton Oil Corp (member of OIL BERMUDA OIL INSURANCE LIMITED.) She served as the president of Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. for one year. She was active in the Republican Party and participated in many local political campaigns. Bill and Gwen retired to Heritage Eagle Bend as founding members in 2000, where she was very active in community events. Gwen had an extremely happy and positive outlook on life. She especially enjoyed her family and many friends. She always extended herself to others and took great care in the nurturing of her friendships. She had years of enjoyment entertaining, playing bridge, picnicking in the mountains, traveling to South Dakota, Sedona and Hawaii with family and friends, watching and attending Nebraska and Bronco football games, celebrating holidays and family gatherings and going on nature walks. She made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. Her smile and her spirit impacted others immeasurably and she will sincerely be missed by all. Gwen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to all. Gwen is survived by her sister Barbara Haines, daughter Barbara Garcia, sons Brad Thayer (Becky), Steven Thayer (Carolyn), seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her daughter Brenda, her parents Kenneth and Pearl Uran, and her brother Kenneth Uran Jr. Memorial services and reception will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 10:00am at Horan and McConaty, 11150 E. Dartmouth Ave. Denver, Colorado.
