Harley Dee King

Harley, 84, of Arvada, Colorado, passed September 14, 2016. Harley was born on Sept.4, 1932 in Southgate, California. He lived in Eagle Rock, CA in his early years and after graduating from high school he attended John Muir Junior College before joining the Navy during the Korean War. He was a fireman and an airplane mechanic while in the Navy. After discharge, he began his enthusiasm for science at Pasadena City College, transferring to Utah State University to complete his BS and MS in Geology. Before joining the USGS, he was a mud logger in the Southern CA oilfields. He was with the survey 35 years retiring in 2001 as scientist emeritus. His love of his work kept him volunteering at the USGS until his illness prevented it. In 1964, He and Carol Jean Caine were married in Logan, Utah. Their first baby, Mary Ann died shortly after birth. Erik Preston was born a year later followed by Sandra Lynne. Harley loved his family, his work, traveling, friends, old cars, two types of music - country and western, Alaska, hunting, birds, good coffee and good beer. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Erik and Sandra (Opsahl); sister, Althea Kifer, sister-in-law Margie King and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ann, his brother, David, and brother-in-law, Jack Kifer. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, from 5-7 PM, at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 7577 West 80th Avenue, Arvada, Colorado 80003. Funeral Services honoring Harley will be Thursday, October 6, 2016, 11 AM, with the family receiving friends, beginning at 10 AM, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Alkire Building, 12995 West 72nd Avenue, in Arvada, Colorado 80005. Interment with military honors will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Area B, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80235.
