Harry John Abbiss

September 1, 1919 — January 29, 2013

John was born in Overstrand, Norfolk, England in 1919. He grew up in Truro, Cornwall, England. During WWII he served as a Captain in the British Army achieving the rank of Major. On February 11, 1941 he married Marie Jean Lucille Baker. Following the war, he continued his education, graduating from the Comborne School of Mines as a Mining Engineer in 1949. He then took a job in Buchans, Newfoundland, Canada, where Jean and their two daughters Yvonne and Hilary joined him. After nine years in Canada and two more children, a son Paul and daughter Susan. He and his family moved to Grants, New Mexico in 1958. There he worked for United Nuclear Corp. as a Safety Engineer and earned many awards for improving safety in the mines. John and Jean became U.S. Citizens in 1968. John retired in 1982 while living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They moved to Centennial, Colorado in 1998 to be near one of their daughters. John is survived by his wife Jean, 3 daughters, his son, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. His many awards include: *Fellow of Mining Institute & Metallurgy (England) *Chartered Engineer (Great Britain) *Registered Professional Engineer (Canada & California) *Certified Safety Professional *The Territorial Decoration for service in WWII with British Army *Order of St. John by Queen Elizabeth for Mining in Canada *Served with British and Canadian Armies and Reserves for 21 years.
