Helen Marie Littlefield

December 2, 1917 — June 10, 2013

Helen was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the only child of Kenneth & Helen McManigal. Her father was a judge and her mother was a social worker. She grew up with a large extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. When Helen was 9 years old, she lived in Louisville, Kentucky for one year. After that, her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she lived in Lakewood, Bay Village, and Rocky River. She attended Lakewood High School and Flora Stone Mather College (CWRU), where she majored in history and psychology, with a minor in education. After college she worked at a school, a summer camp, a photography studio and the telephone company. She met and married her husband Stuart Littlefield during World War II. She traveled with him to army bases in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. Helen and Stuart returned to Ohio and raised three children, Karen, Ken and Stuart. When Helen was widowed, she returned to work as a preschool teacher and director in Rocky River and Lakewood, retiring at age 70. She loved hearing from her former students as they grew up. Her active group of lifelong friends included high school and college friends, neighbors, bridge partners, fellow parents and teachers. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 77 years, alumni associations at Lakewood High School and CWRU, as well as the Board of the Lakewood Day Nursery. Five years ago Helen moved to Colorado to be closer to her family. She lived at Clermont Park in Denver, a retirement community, where she made many new friends while participating in bridge club, library work, and a book club. She loved sharing stories about her life, and hearing stories from her friends in return. Last week she passed away peacefully while reading a book. She is survived by daughter Karen, son-in-law Bruce McCrea, grandchildren Megan and Kevin from Denver Colorado; son Kenneth Littlefield, daughter-in-law Bonnie (Christy), grandchildren Dana and Andrea of Richmond, Virginia; son Stuart Littlefield, daughter-in-law Kathy, grandchildren Alexis and Isaiah from Golden, Colorado, and nieces Nancy & Anne. She loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Memorial Service will be held at St. Peters Church Lakewood Ohio, August 3. Donations instead of flowers may be made to St. Peter's Church Lakewood, Ohio, or a children's charity of your choice.
