Henry G. Fieger,, M.D. Jr.

December 5, 1939 — August 9, 2018

Henry G. Fieger, Jr. passed away peacefully on August 9, 2018, after a brief illness.

Henry was born December 5, 1939, in Wyoming, Ohio. He was the only child of Tella & Henry ""Bud"" Fieger, Sr., both originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After the untimely death of his father when Henry was young, his mother left Ohio and moved them to New York to be closer to her family.

Henry graduated from Amherst College and went on to attend Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1966. During his college years, he spent a summer at Glacier National Park as a ""singing waiter"". This experience led to his great love for The West and he was drawn to return some day. He chose to leave the East Coast and completed his medical internship and residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center from 1967 to 1968.

Henry served in the Army Reserves and was called up to active duty as a general surgeon from 1968 to 1970. During this time, he served a year in Vietnam with the Army's 1st Battalion. While serving our country, he earned the Bronze Star, Air Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. Upon discharge, Henry had reached the rank of Captain.

Henry returned to the Denver area after his military service. He served as an instructor of anatomy and associate clinical professor of neurosurgery at University Hospital. He was on-staff at St. Joseph, Children's, Denver General, Presbyterian/St. Luke's and Lutheran Hospitals. He was board certified in neurosurgery in 1977. During his tenure, he was chief of neurosurgery at both St. Joseph and Children's Hospital. He was chairman of the Department of Surgery and the president of the medical staff at St. Joseph Hospital. In 1989, Henry became chief of neurosurgery at the Colorado Permanente Medical Group.

During his career, Henry served as a founding member of the Colorado Neurosurgical Society. He was a member and then president of the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society between 1978-1989. He was appointed to the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners for 12 years. He served as chairman of the Surgery Panel of Medical Examiners, and representative of the board of directors for the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants. Henry authored and collaborated on many scientific papers and publications during his medical career.

Henry and Jill Hilton were married in May, 1977. He described Jill as ""the love of his life"". They enjoyed 34 years of marriage until her untimely death in 2015. He bravely continued to live his life as best he could after losing her. The two of them shared a love of poetry, books and travel around the world, as well as, hosting friends and family at their beautiful home for holiday celebrations.

Henry loved Colorado and the mountains. He often spent time hiking and skiing in his younger years. He enjoyed fine food and drink while discussing the news of the day with family and friends.

Those who loved him will sorely miss Henry. We picture him with Jill now, getting ready to experience a great new adventure in the time to come.
