Henry James Pepe

November 14, 1935 — November 16, 2018

Henry James Pepe, 83, passed away of natural causes on Nov. 16, 2018. He is survived by Lila, the love of his life for 56 years; daughter Laura (Giles); daughter Andrea (Andrew); son James (Cyndi); and brother James (MaryAnn) Pepe. Seven grandchildren loved him as PopPop.

He grew up on Long Island, NY, spent four years in the Navy during the Korean War and then attended Emporia State Teacher's College. He received a B.S. in Special Education and a Master's degree in School Psychology. After 9 years in the school system, he earned a PhD from KU. He spent 24 years at UNM as a Professor of Special Education where he valued his many colleagues and the group of professors fondly known as ""the Kansas mafia."" After retirement, he worked as a consultant to the NM State Dept. of Corrections. Henry was a member of several professional organizations, including the Council for Exceptional Children, and Adelante, Inc. where he served as a member and President of the Board of Directors.

Henry loved sports and competition of all kinds. He said the best parts of life were his family, golfing buddies, softball teammates, poker bunch, friends at the Duke City Bridge Club and the American Legion Post 49.
