Henry C. Von Struve, III

October 23, 1925 — March 24, 2012

Henry C. Von Struve III, 86, of Westminster, Colorado, passed away March 24, 2012 at Balfour - The Reserve, in Louisville, Colorado. U.S. Navy veteran, born October 23, 1925 in Hale Center, Texas to Henry C., Jr. and Frances (Cunningham) Von Struve. He graduated in 1949 from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, with a degree in electrical engineering, and achieved a master's degree in engineering at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He retired as an aerospace engineer from Lockheed-Martin Corporation, Waterton, Colorado. During his career at Lockheed-Martin, he headed a team of engineers who designed the scientific instruments for Viking, the first Mars lander in 1976. Instruments aboard the spacecraft provided valuable information on the Martian atmosphere and surface. He greatly enjoyed computers and programming during retirement, along with fishing, hunting, traveling and being with his family. Preceded in death by parents and first wife, Imogene (Bowles) Von Struve (1984). Survived by wife of 25 years, Nora Von Struve, Westminster; daughter and spouse, Carol (Bill) McClelland and granddaughter, Carra McClelland, Lincoln, Nebraska; son, Roger Von Struve, Longmont; stepsons, Edward, David, Paul, Michael Bradley; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
