Herschel Leon (Lee) Self of Denver died on August 1, 2011 at home. He was 90 years old. Lee was born on February 3, 1921 in Bessemer, Alabama to George and Velma Self. He served in the Air Force during World War II. Afterwards he attended the University of Denver on the GI bill, earning a B.A. and M.A. in Education. He married Irene Metal in 1948 in Denver. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he started his teaching career; then returned to Denver in 1960. Lee loved his work as an elementary teacher for Denver Public Schools. After retiring he continued to substitute teach until the age of 87. In addition, he held part time jobs that fed his life long passion for work and socializing. He never met a stranger. Lee's greatest passion was for his wife and family. His interests included reading, gardening, movies & conversation. He believed that continuous learning and self improvement were always worthy goals. His is survived by his wife, Irene Self, their daughters and their spouses, (Janine Reid and William Bennett of Greeley, Nicole and James Sheckells of Aurora and Andrea and David Anderson of Denver), and six grandchildren.
