Hope Martinez

September 24, 1949 — November 15, 2018

The heavenly gates opened on November 15, 2018, to welcome our beloved sister, daughter and aunt, Hope Martinez. Hope was born on September 24, 1949 and was the oldest of four children. She was raised and received her primary education in Brighton, Colorado. After graduating from Brighton High School, she attended the University of Northern Colorado where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. Hope was the first person in both her paternal and maternal sides of the family to attend a university. While attending the University of Northern Colorado she not only excelled in her studies but was very active in social justice causes. During this time she also developed a passion for painting. After completing college, Hope taught migrant children in the Fort Lupton School District. She was married for a brief period of time, moved to Pensacola, Florida where she taught special needs children. While living in Florida she developed a love of the ocean and learned to scuba dive and participated in various water sports.

Hope was a nature lover and enjoyed traveling. She loved going to the mountains with family and especially enjoyed visiting the Caribbean Islands and Hawaiian Islands.

After several years of teaching, Hope decided to make a career change and became a computer systems analyst at Mountain Bell. In many ways Hope was a trailblazer. She was not only the first person in her family to attend college but she entered into a profession which at the time was dominated primarily by men. Nonetheless, she excelled in her profession.

In 1980, Hope remarried and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. During the time she lived in Indiana she delighted in going to the Indianapolis 500 and the Kentucky Derby.

Although Hope had no biological children, she adored children including her nieces, nephews, stepchildren and step grandchildren. Hope had a very kind spirit; was very generous, often helping people who were less fortunate and in need of help. She also regularly contributed to numerous nonprofit agencies.

Hope retired from IBM in 2008. During Hopes retirement years she took joy in working in her garden and being a homemaker. Hope relished the holidays especially Christmas. She would always lavishly decorate her home for Christmas and hosted great family gatherings.

Hope fought a courageous fight against her cancer. During her treatment she was strong, independent, determined and optimistic. Even though Hope is no longer with us on this earth, her legacy will live on, forever, in all of us.

Hope will be lovingly remembered by her mother, Edubina Gallegos; sister, Linda Hernandez; brothers, Augustine Hernandez (Paula), Robert Hernandez (Jeannie); numerous nieces, nephews, stepchildren, step grandchildren, and other extended family and dear friends. Hope was predeceased by her father, Louis Hernandez.
