Howard Joseph Akers, age 69, passed away July 30, 2012. Born February 10, 1943 in Longmont, Colorado to Joseph and Mary Akers. He is survived by three children; Randy Akers of Omaha, Nebraska, Andrew Akers of Clemson, South Carolina and Larissa Fravel of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and six grandchildren. Howard graduated in 1961 from Longmont High school and went on to attend the University of Colorado- Boulder where he majored in history. His post graduate work included a Masters Degree in School Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado. During his teaching career he taught in Lone Star, Colorado in 1967 and moved to Aurora in 1968 where he began teaching History at East Middle School. From there he transferred to West Middle School where he was a counselor until his retirement in 1989. He loved the outdoors, walking his dogs, and was a help to others. A Memorial Service will be held in memory of Howard on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 11:00 in the morning at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel in Aurora. A light luncheon will follow at the Heartlight Center. Memorial donations are suggested to the Denver Dumb Friends League, 2080 S. Quebec St., Denver, CO 80231.
