Howard W. Anderson was born January 12, 1937 in Hartford, Connecticut to Hazel Alberta (Stauffer) and Henry Chas Anderson. He was the youngest of four boys, Henry, Leroy and Sherwood. The family later moved to Covington, Ohio where Howard attended grade and high school. He delivered newspapers, was a Boy Scout and attended a National Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He was QB for his football team which won many titles, played basketball, ran hurdles for the track team and participated in state events. His first automobile was a Ford Model A, which he raced against his brother Henry's Model A. Howard's passion was to hunt, trap, fish and play recreational golf. Unfortunately, at that time his high school did not have a golf team. He did get to attend football tryouts at Ohio State Univeristy and Woody Hayes liked what he saw, but Howard decided he wanted to play basketball. So he went to Ohio University in 1956, to study geology and got a starting position on their basketball team. He received a rib injury so after one year he decided to enlist in the U. S. Army. He spent 3 years in Germany, attaining rank of SP5 E5 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1962. While in Germany, he played on the 184th Company Army Basketball team that won several cage divisional tournaments. Howard then returned to Ohio University and completed his degree in education. After graduation he worked as a Computer Programmer at the U.S. Corp of Engineers facility in Columbus, Ohio. There he met Martha (Marty) Bagent in October, 1962. They were engaged in December and married May 18, 1963. June 27, 1965, they were blessed with their daughter, Karen Lynn (Stevison). In 1971, a company move required the family to leave Ohio and move to Englewood, Colorado. Howard worked in the computer industry for the remainder of his work years with Honeywell, Zenith and Bull. Howard had found a home in Colorado and didn't want to live anywhere else. He enjoyed retirement, playing golf with the South Suburban Senior Men's League, fly fishing, traveling in his Winnebago, watching golf and football and was an avid reader. He learned to build golf clubs and played with a set of clubs he had made. October 31, 2001, he had a hole-in-one on the 4th hole at South Suburban Golf Course. He also built his own fly rods and tied his own flies. He liked to fish at Deckers on the Platte River and had taken several float trips in Wyoming on the Snake River. Howard never looked backwards, only forward. He would say he couldn't change what had happened, only learn from it. He never said, 'Why me?,' in regards to his cancer battle, he just accepted his plight and tried to live life the best he could. He has left his mark on our lives and we will miss him so. A Memorial Service will be held at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 East County Line Road (One block to the west of Holly Street), Centennial, Colorado 80122, Friday, November 5, 2010 at 3:00 PM.
