Howard Brooks Metcalf

May 5, 1924 — July 28, 2011

Brooks Metcalf, born May 5, 1924 in Hannibal, MO, moved to Denver in 1926 with his parents Howard and Alice. Brooks grew up in North Denver where he met many of his lifetime friends. Brooks loved sports, played baseball and was the youngest batboy for the famous Public Service Softball Team. Brooks went to public schools in Denver, graduating from North High School in 1942. During Brooks' high school career, he met Nadine Frazer who would become his wife a few years later. Brooks joined the Navy in 1942 where he was assigned to submarine duty in the South Pacific. He made three war patrols including one on the USS Flasher, the submarine that sunk the most tonnage in WW II. On his return from submarine service, Brooks married Nadine Frazer on August 22, 1946. Brooks went to work for General Electric where he worked until 1950. Brooks left GE and went to work for Public Service Company of Colorado as a meter reader until his retirement in 1988. Brooks and Nadine have three children, Stephen (Lauri), Kaye (Jim), Greg (Gail), and six grand children, Christian (Paul), Matthew (Kari), Chad (Sarah), Nicholas, Bryan and Travis, and three great children, Alex, Abby, and Raven. Brooks had a love of railroads, especially old steam engines and that love followed him throughout his life. He also loved Submarines and the memorabilia that went with it. Brooks had so much respect and admiration for his fellow veterans, especially his fellow submariners where Brooks is now on Eternal Patrol. Brooks and Nadine traveled with family and friends to Mexico, Hawaii, Georgia, Florida, Oregon, Washington, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, and Canada where Brooks was able to take the Canadian Railroad from Vancouver to Banff/Lake Louise. Brooks and Nadine lived the last two years at the Lakewood Meridian Retirement Community. Brooks leaves behind a loving family and friends....and memories of a GREAT Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend. Memorial Service Monday, August 8th at 2:00pm, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard.
