Howard J. Wayne

Howard J. Wayne, 79, a retired Boston attorney, passed away in Denver, CO on May 13, 2020, after a brief illness.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Carol, his beloved family, Jeffrey and Diane Wayne of Chicago and Melissa Maynell of Littleton, CO, as well as his 4 adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Wayne and Jon and Robert Maynell.

Howard was born in Holyoke, MA and was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He received his JD from Boston College Law School in 1966. Following his graduation from Law School, Howard was a Captain in the US Army, Judge Advocate General Corps, for three years, primarily as a defense and appellate lawyer.

He returned to Boston and began his career as an Attorney. He was a founding member of two law firms: Lawson & Wayne and Wayne, Richard & Hurwitz. Not only was he a successful attorney, but he was involved in many agencies and boards which are too numerous to mention but included Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Salem State University, The Chairman of The Council for the Developmentally Disabled (State of MA), A Board member of Habitat for Humanity and former President of Community Work Services.

He was an avid sports fan of all the Boston Teams and served as General Manager of the Brewster White Caps of the Cape Cod League. He could pride himself on always being in attendance at the Championship series of all these teams, as well as, College Basketball's Final Four and the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. In addition, he was knowledgeable of and a collector of Fine Art which he and Carol pursued over a period of 50 years representing their favorite artists and themes. His art and passion for travelling resulted in the couple visiting six continents and many countries over the last 30 years. His charitable endeavors demonstrated his passion for the developmentally disabled, under-served populations, and the welfare of children. After his retirement, he made his home in San Francisco before moving to Denver, Colorado in 2018.

Following his death, numerous cards and messages told of the impact that he had on the lives of many because of his understanding, kindness and generosity. Not too long ago, he said that he had a wonderful and fulfilling life. He was able to accomplish all he wanted to do and felt that he succeeded in having it be so enriched.

In a newspaper interview at UMass in 2015 he concluded by saying ""Follow your heart and you will wind up as happy as I was because of all the opportunities that came along"".
