Hugh S. Sloan, Jr., DSW, age 82, died January 4, 2025. He was born February 14, 1942 in Ogden, Utah.
He was a long distance runner for Weber High School, graduating in 1960. Hugh attended Weber College in Ogden, UT on a track scholarship and was President of his fraternity-Sigma Delta Pi. As a Junior in college, Hugh was recruited by Dick Motta (a future NBA coach) to be Team Manager for the Weber College Men’s basketball team, where he developed an absolute lifelong love of the game.
Hugh married Sherma Jean Smith after graduation in 1964. He began his career as a Social Worker for the State of Utah and obtained a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah in 1967. Later that year, Hugh joined the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) to fulfill active duty military service during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Staten Island, NY at the USPHS Hospital serving members of all the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Hugh continued his education after the war, earning a Doctorate of Social Work at the University of Southern California in 1972. He then continued his career with the USPHS fulfilling assignments in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, CA, and finally Denver, CO.
Hugh and Sherma have lived in their Colorado home for 45 years, where he planted and nurtured hundreds of trees, plants, flowers, and garden vegetables. Hugh loved spending time outdoors working in his yard, caring for his horses, and with a dog always by his side.
A capstone of Hugh’s career was when he was highly involved in Public Safety and Planning during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, UT. He retired later that year from the USPHS as a Rear Admiral after 35 years of service in the Commissioned Corps and as an Assistant Surgeon General of Region VIII.
Survivors include Sherma, his wife of 60 years, 2 daughters-Sheryl Beutler (James) and Michelle Sloan, 6 Grandchildren-Austin Huff, Trevor Beutler, Sterling Huff, Allison Beutler, Chance Sloan, and Mia George, and 2 Great Grandchildren-Sloan Beutler and Roman Beutler.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints , 5175 S. Picadilly St., Aurora, CO 80015. There will be a visitation prior to the funeral at 9:00 a.m. Following the service, the burial will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver at 12:30 p.m.
