Ida Ruth Mey was born in Lexington, MS on June 4, 1927 to Myrtle and John Berry. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Mey; daughter, Terri Lynn Mey; her parents and siblings Annis, B.C., Hazel, Cecil, Fay, John and Frances. As a young child in rural Mississippi, Ida Ruth was raised by family friends when her own parents were struggling to keep the family fed and clothed. Because of the foster family's commitment, she was the only sibling that graduated high school in Lexington. Ruth left Mississippi and moved to Colorado as a young woman. She attended secretarial school and was working for an oil company in downtown Denver when she met John Mey. Following a small wedding in Decatur, Illinois, the family lived on Quebec Street in Denver. They moved to the home on Leyden Street in 1965. John died in 1973 and Ruth sold the home in 1978. Ruth then moved to her home in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood and became active at the Kirk of Bonnie Brae church. During these years, Ruth enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling with her dear friend, Jim. She frequently hosted Sunday evening dinners with children and grandchildren gathered. Ruth moved from her home on Cove Way in the early 90's. Ruth worked for Mr. Hitchcock, a self-employed attorney from the early 1960's before joining the Gorsuch, Kirgis, Campbell, Walker, Grover Law Firm in 1972. She was employed with Gorsuch Kirgis for 22 years, retiring in 1994. Following retirement, she settled at Windsor Gardens and made many new friends. Especially close friends, Rose and Cookie, were seen walking the circle with Ruth, or joining her and the youngest grandchildren looking for ducks on the Highline Canal. Ruth was President of The Colorado Club while she lived at Windsor Gardens and also served as secretary for her building for several years. She remained active with the Kirk of Bonnie Brae often driving friends to services and visiting the ill or shut-ins. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and doted on her grandchildren. She was a familiar face at sports and school activities and was known fondly by many as Grandma Mey. Ida Ruth is survived by children Danny L Mey (Nancy Johnson), Michele Yonker (Greg); grandchildren Cassie Mey, Joshua Yonker (Kristina), Briana Jimenez (David), Sol Johnson-Mey (Lacey), Jennifer Meier (Charlie), Abigail Yonker, Dylan Mey and Maddie Mey and six great-grandchildren. She was also survived by nephew Lee Mey (Shelly), great nephews Jeremiah Mey (Bethany) and Michael Mey (Sarah) and one great-great niece.
