Jack Winthrop Montgomery

Jack W. Montgomery passed away December 24, 2017, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, CO surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born June 13, 1930 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to the late Raymond Jack and Gertrude Louise (Nightingale) Montgomery. He was brother to Harriet (Morrill). Growing up he made good friends that lasted. In high school, Jack was invited to attend Young Life Club. He discovered that many interesting girls also attended and he determined to go frequently! Turns out, the best thing he learned was that he was dearly loved by the God of the Universe, and so he chose to trust in Jesus Christ. Jack lived his life learning about faith, inviting others to come along, and worked hard to trust when life took turns he didn’t understand. Jack attended the University of Colorado and joined the ATO fraternity forging more friendships to last the rest of his life. After receiving his B.A. in business in December 1952, he spent the following winter in Aspen, Colorado - skiing during the day and waiting tables at the Red Lion Inn in the evenings. In 1953 Jack joined the U.S. Navy, attending OCS and having the chance of a lifetime aboard ship. Next, the navy assigned him to land-locked Omaha, NE as a naval recruiter, much to his initial dismay. However, the Lord had special plans: Jack was to meet a sweet young nurse, Barbara Reynolds, when he donated blood and joined her young singles group at church. They were married in May of 1957. Jack retired as a Lieutenant, JG after 7 years active and reserve service. Jack began a 60 year career in the Life Insurance business in 1956 adding a masters in financial services later. His M.O. was conscientiousness and trustworthiness. He and Barbara made their home in Aurora, CO and raised their children, Nancy (Montgomery) Sadler and John Montgomery. They became happily rooted in their church, supported Young Life & many missions. Jack and his camera took Barbara to various parts of the world and his little family around the U.S. for many family vacations. In 1984, Jack lost Barbara to cancer after 27 loving, happy years of marriage. His tender care for her throughout that trial was a blessing to all. By 1988 Jack knew he’d met another very special lady in the late Tricia Dobbs Hueston and they married creating a new & very large family. They enjoyed this family menagerie immensely, including the 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, hardly ever missing one of their games or performances. Jack and Tricia were fun, people-lovers who fostered an atmosphere of “welcome” hosting others in their home, “adopting” 2 DU exchange students, supporting many charities and taking their family on vacations. They stayed active in Bible studies, athletic teams, and traveled extensively. Jack shared many of his favorite lifetime activities with Tricia including snow-skiing, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping, swimming, jeeping, biking, golfing, and tennis. Jack lost Tricia to cancer in June 2016 after 28 years in this beautiful marriage. Once again his devotion and faithful care for her ministered to all of us who loved her too. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday January 4,at 10:00AM at Greenwood Community Church (5600 E. Belleview Ave, Greenwood Village, CO 80111).
