Jack Lloyd Shafer

October 19, 1936 — April 5, 2013

Jack L. Shafer was born October 19, 1936, and passed away unexpectedly on April 5, 2013, while on vacation. He is survived by his wife and travel companion of 10 years, Eleanor (Bonney) Shafer; his children Cheryl Gibson and her husband Scott, Jack B. Shafer, Sheila McMillin; his grandchildren Sam and Keyven Gibson, Marc and Nick Shafer, Megan, Mallory and Monty McMillin; his sister Sally Wiegert and several nieces and nephews. Dad was born in Peru, Illinois. He graduated from Fond-du-lac High School in Wisconsin. Dad joined the Air Force after high school and served from 1955-1963, and was honorably discharged while stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. He joined the Lakewood Fire Department and after climbing the ranks, he retired in 1986 as an Assistant Chief. Since his retirement, Dad has traveled by boat, train, plane, car, and R.V. all over the world. He loved to be on the go. He was very active with the Inter-Mountain Chapter of Railroads. Dad loved trains; he even owned his own private rail car for a while. Dad also holds a title of River Boat Pilot. Dad was very active in the arts, going to concerts and plays. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family, having lunch, dinner and just being together. Dad had many wonderful friends and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 26th at 1PM, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Blvd., Denver. Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery. A celebration of Jack's life will follow the interment at Indian Tree Golf Course, 7555 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada.
