James Robert English

Jim, 90, of Denver, Colorado passed June 26, 2016. He was the son of Estelle and Judge James T. English of Omaha, Nebraska. Jim graduated from Creighton University and served in the United States Army Air Corps. He married Margaret Elizabeth Green of Omaha and they had nine children. After her passing in 1972, Jim married Donna Galvin and they had two additional children. They later divorced. Jim's half-brother, Bill Boyle and his wife, Lois, also preceded him in death. Jim was an insurance broker for most of his career and a champion amateur golfer. He won the 1950 Trans-Miss at Happy Hollow Club in Omaha and two Nebraska State Amateurs. He also won state amateur titles in Iowa, Kansas and Colorado. He was a two-time Broadmoor Invitational champion and an amateur winner of the Colorado Open. Jim qualified for nine U.S. Opens and was the low amateur in the 1959 Open at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, where he beat a few other amateurs named Jack Nicklaus, Charlie Coe, Billy Joe Patton and Deane Beman. Jim also played in the U.S. Amateur six times, reaching the quarterfinals in 1951. He is in the Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa Golf Halls of Fame. He was a long-time member and 11-time Club Champion at Columbine Country Club in Littleton, Colorado. Jim was a charter member at the TPC at Plum Creek, then a member at Lone Tree until his death. He was a parishioner of Church of the Risen Christ in Denver. Jim is survived by his 11 children; Jim (Gayle), Becky, Kathy, Tom (Jeanne), Matt, Pat (Rachel), Lisa (Rick) Taylor, Abby (Greg) Waldbaum, Amy, Karen (Steve) Schaff and Michael (Jacque) and all of their families--31 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren! A Celebration of Life honoring Jim will be on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado 80227. Reception afterwards, followed by the interment at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery - Area ""A"", 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80235.
