James Owen Hartman, 1926-2013, will be remembered as a teacher, coach, mentor and friend to hundreds, if not thousands of young people and their families over the course of his career in Denver. Jim was born in Denver Colorado on June 26, 1926 to Albert and Helen Hartman, the middle of three children. He is survived by Noreen Peterson and Barbara Etchison. At a young age Jim started a career in diving beginning at Washington Park Lake, East HS diving team, and culminating at the University of Michigan. After his service in the US Navy he married his wife Patricia on April 9, 1947 and enjoyed 64 years of marriage before she passed away in 2011. He was a Denver Public School physical education teacher and coach with numerous team championships and personal coaching awards. He was one of the original team of coaches to start the DU Hilltoppers in 1952, and also became the Diving Coach for the University of Denver. Upon his retirement in 1981, after 31 years of teaching and coaching, he and his wife Patricia spent 17 years on the road traveling to all 50 states. They had two children Donna and Dennis, four grandchildren Todd, Chris, Michael, Shawna and four great-grandchildren Noah, James, Genevieve and Lucas.
