James “Jim” Miller passed away early in the morning on January 29th, 2025, after a difficult battle with cancer in his lungs at the age of 75.
Jim is preceded in death by his father Douglas Miller, his mother Mary Call Miller, his brothers Douglas Jr. and Michael Miller, and sister-in-law Cindy Krumeich Miller. He is survived by his wife, Carol Miller, his siblings, Mary Ann Thurgood, Christine (Paul) Sorensen, Richard (Janine) Miller, Robert Miller, his children Brandon Miller, Candi Williams Miller, Mandy (Jared) Ellsworth, Andrea (Craig) Flinders, Cassy (Grant) Van Noy, Ali Miller, Hannah Miller, and 13 grandchildren.
Jim was born and raised in Brigham City, Utah to Douglas and Mary Miller as the third of seven children. In his childhood, he learned how to work hard at his father’s side in the fruit orchards across the street from his home, and with his brother in the cellar of Peach City Diner peeling potatoes. During his high school years he cherished walking home for lunch each day with his mother who was an English teacher at his school.
In 1968 Jim served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas Mission. A few years after his mission, Carol Ranzenberger caught Jim’s eye when she came into Mayes Cyclery where he worked at the time. After that, Jim could hardly stand to be away from her and the two became inseparable for the next 53 years. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple in 1972.
Not long after they married, Jim and Carol settled in Littleton Colorado where they started their family. They had six children, all boys but five, as he used to say. Jim’s foremost focus for his family was to provide for them both temporally and spiritually.
The Miller family motto is to work hard and play hard, sometimes making them one in the same. The many hobbies Jim collected were only enhanced when he could do them with his family. This included working on the family ranch in Nebraska, boating in Lake Powell, and playing softball at the neighborhood park…as long as everyone remembered, “there’s no crying in [soft]ball.”
Jim was a commercial real estate developer by profession and built hundreds of Big O Tires around the country. His final projects were the development of two medical plazas in Lone Tree, Colorado.
Retirement gifted Jim with much more time with his family, including his 13 beloved grandchildren. Known to them as Papa, he gave each a special nickname as a sign of his great affection for them.
In 2015 Jim embarked on his final and greatest endeavor outside the nurturing of his family by starting Cornerstone Productions. The nonprofit was developed in order to bring the musical work Lamb of God to the Denver area, testifying to his community that Jesus is the Christ. Over the years, Cornerstone has grown to include a chorale and orchestra, and the group puts on several sacred music events throughout the year.
Jim was a stalwart ministering brother to countless individuals, and a father figure to more than just his children.
In his final days, Jim was surrounded by his family, giving counsel and love to each of his children. The night before he passed, he pronounced a blessing on his family promising them the blessings of Heavenly Father if they stay true to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Above Jim’s nightstand hangs a lyric from the Lamb of God, “These words will hang on my last breath: I know Him.” Even as his lungs weakened, his devotion to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ remained his strength. Indeed, it may be said of him also, these words hung on his last breath: I know Him.
