On May 19, 2022, James (Jimmy) Bourcy, age 61, a proud, lifelong resident of Colorado, tragically fell to his death while hiking on North Table Mountain in high winds.
Fondly known as "The Badger” by his siblings, nieces, and nephews, he worked in several diverse fields including the Peace Corps in Guatemala, where his vision of the world was shaped; he worked in the medical field at Swedish hospital, where many benefited from his empathetic healing touch; and most recently as an associate at King Soopers in Capitol Hill, where he brought his warm outgoing cadence to colleagues and loyal customers alike. Our Beloved Badger genuinely had a servant’s heart.
Jimmy was a beacon of positivity, a man who loved people and planet Earth. He found his strength in nature, loving and enjoying the solitude of the woods, the majesty of the ocean, or a ray of sun filtered through golden, quaking aspen trees. He loved a powerful storm and a soft snowfall in the mountains where silence holds the lease.
He was supremely kind and generous. He often gave someone less fortunate the sweater or coat off his back. The story of his generosity that most exemplify the man he was, happened several years ago. Walking home from work, he noticed a young boy and his mother in a playground for about a week. One day they knocked on his door. At the time, Jimmy had beautiful long wavy hair. The boy asked him if he was Jesus, and he said he was not. The boy’s mother explained that her son was dying of cancer and had lost his hair due to chemo treatments. The young boy asked Jimmy if he could have his hair so that when he went to heaven Jesus would recognize him. Jimmy immediately invited them in and let the child cut his hair.
Our Badger possessed the heart of a Lion,
The soul of a traveler,
The mind of a philosopher,
The curiosity of a kitten,
The tenacity of a hummingbird, and
The spirit of a badger.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Stephen Bourcy, and survived by his mother, Mary Jeanne O’Farrell-Bourcy, seven siblings, several aunts, uncles, several adoring nieces, and nephews, their extended families, cousins and countless friends. He was a stalwart Bronco fan and loved classic rock, and backpacking in the great outdoors. He never met a stranger; everyone on this Earth was just a friend he had not met yet. He died doing what he loved, simply living his best life. God will surely enjoy his company as much as have we all.
There may be no ruler by which to measure a man such as our Badger, but he can be the yardstick by which we measure ourselves.
“Peace Out Badger.”
