James Milton Richey III

James M. Richey, III, named after his great-grandfather and father, James M. Richey III, 74, resident of Evergreen since 1972, died May 31, 2011. Mr. Richey was born September 1, 1936 in Decatur, Illinois. He attended Missouri School of Mines and the University of Chicago before earning his undergraduate degree in Geology from The University of Illinois. He completed his Master's Degree in Geology at Florida State University in 1961. He worked as a Radiation Safety Engineer at Argonne National Laboratory prior to a 28-year career with Mobil Oil Corporation. He was responsible for evaluation of potential oil reserve estimates and development of offshore drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico, followed by 20 years of evaluation of Alaska's North Slope, as well as other worldwide reservoirs. Prior to his retirement in 1991 as a Sr. and Associate Geologic Advisor he represented Mobil Oil in arbitration settlements among the several oil companies who developed Alaska's Arctic Resources. His work is now included in college courses in Petroleum Geology. His special interests included all specialties of Science, Mathematics, Natural History, Military, American and World history, Evolution, Genealogy and especially sharing his vast knowledge with his children. He enjoyed many hobbies and had an adventurous life. He was a 50-year member of Sigma Xi Scientific Society and Life Member of the National Rifle Association. He belonged to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Mile High Mercedes-Benz Club of America. For 10 years he was a Volunteer for the Prehistoric Journey Exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Survivors include Mary Kathleen, his wife of 52 years; his son James M. Richey IV of Boulder; his daughter Nancy Lynn Misage of Austin, TX; two granddaughters, Amber and Amanda Richey, and one grandson and his namesake, James M. Richey V; his brother, Mack David Richey, M.D., retired Plastic Surgeon of Seattle, Washington. His daughter-in-law Nancy Cathleen Richey and son-in-law Mark Misage were and are as his own in his heart. Donations may be made in his memory to Sigma Xi, P.O.
