James Elwood Smith

June 20, 1923 — December 31, 2018

Passed away peacefully on Monday, December 31, 2018. Jim, or James E. as he was known to many, was born on June 20, 1923 in Blanchard, Iowa to Charles Smith and Helen Kennedy Smith. He grew up in Scottsbluff, Nebraska with one sister and one brother, both predeceased.

He served in the United States Army from March 1943 to February 1946. At one point during his years of service he was stationed at Ft. Logan, then a processing center, where he met his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Virginia Haley. After being discharged honorably, he attended and graduated from Denver University in 1949.

After the war, James owned his own business. He was manufacturer's representative for several building supply companies.

He was an avid golfer and long-time member of Pinehurst Country Club. He was known for his spectacularly manicured yard and as a trusted and treasured friend.

Jim is survived by his four children Peggy (Peter Nelson), Greg (Annie Roberts), Nancy Miller, and Jeff (Antonette DeLauro) along with eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One grandchild predeceased him, Spencer Nelson.
