James Carroll Springer

January 5, 1936 — May 14, 2019

James Carroll Springer, 83, a Colorado resident since 1959.

James Carroll Springer was born to A. Marshall Springer and Jane Springer (Morgan) in Indiana and died near his long-time residence in Littleton, Colorado at the age of 83.

Jim graduated Valedictorian at Thomas Carr Howe HS in 1954 and Summa Cum Laude from Purdue University where he studied physics and mathematics in 1958. Jim was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for graduate studies at Stanford where he completed one year before accepting a position at Martin Marietta, which brought him to Colorado to become an aerospace engineer. During his career, Jim played a major role in Martin's Strategic Defense Initiative Group (aka SDI and Star Wars), The Titan projects, and other missile defense and guidance projects. He retired in 1993.

He loved his family and had an outstanding career with Martin, but his true passion was golf. He joined the Pinery Country Club in Parker, CO in 1977 where he often played more than 36 holes a day. He also ran many prestigious golf tournaments and was heavily involved in the Colorado Golf Association (CGA). Jim played golf around the world and travelled throughout Colorado rating golf courses and volunteered for years at PGA's international tournaments. Notably, Jim took his son, Don, to Scotland to play golf as Don's college graduation gift, where they finished second in an international father son tournament. Even during his most intense phases of dementia, Jim remembered and reveled in this specific golf experience.

Jim is survived by his children; Don Springer and his wife Kirsten with two grandsons, James and Garrett; and his second son Mike Springer along with his wife Lisa, his grandson, Jesse, and his two step grandchildren, Megan and Michael Schenfeld. Jim is also survived by his two siblings, his sister Betty Jane Springer, and his brother, Albert ""Bud"" Springer and wife, Martha.

He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. A memorial celebration will be held in his honor Sunday, May 26th 2pm at the Pinery Country Club in Parker, Colorado.
