It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Clark Tanner—a man whose warmth, kindness, and integrity touched countless lives. On January 6, 2025, Jim left this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and an enduring example of grace in the face of life’s challenges.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 9, 1948, Jim grew up with a zest for life that only deepened with time. He attended St. Francis Elementary School and Brophy College Preparatory High School before continuing his education at Santa Clara University. His love for his alma mater was so profound that he established a scholarship fund to give back to the institution and the community he cherished. His thirst for knowledge led him to earn two master’s degrees from the University of Denver.
In 1973, Jim met Cindy, his soulmate and the love of his life. They treasured a 50-year marriage full of laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Together, they explored the corners of the world, shared a passion for the outdoors, and raised three daughters with a love for life and travel. Jim’s dream of owning a home in Telluride became a reality after first visiting the breathtaking area in 1972. Telluride became a sanctuary for the family—a place where they hiked, skied, and created memories that will forever be etched in their hearts.
Jim was a gifted certified public accountant who started a CPA practice that grew and ultimately became Heider, Tanner, and Dirks, Inc., where his loyalty and dedication was rewarded with clients who became lifelong friends. Even after being diagnosed with a rare and relentless cancer in 1998, Jim displayed incredible resilience. He endured four clinical trials, countless treatments, and the harsh effects of his medications, yet he rarely missed a day of work. His determination and work ethic inspired everyone around him. At age 70, Jim retired, leaving behind not just a career but a legacy of professionalism and kindness.
Always a thinker, Jim penned a book proposing reforms to simplify the income tax system—a testament to his belief in justice and his commitment to making the world a better place. In addition, he was instrumental in founding Auto CPA, a network of nationwide CPAs who specialize in serving auto dealers. The group convenes biannually to foster the exchange of knowledge and promote ongoing educational opportunities. Humble despite his many accomplishments, Jim was respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Being the eternal optimist, it was fitting that Jim was a member of the South Denver Optimist Club for forty-plus years.
Through years of health struggles, Jim never lost his spirit. He cherished every moment, finding joy in the company of his loved ones and the beauty of life. Just days before his passing, he spent an unforgettable week in Telluride, surrounded by family and the place he loved most.
Jim’s absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy; his daughters, Megan Harrison (Marty), Lindsay Miller (Justin), and Kirsten Lewis (Nick); his eight adoring grandchildren; his seven siblings; and more friends than can be counted. He is now reunited with his infant son, Russel, his parents, Mary Jean and Ray Tanner, and many dear friends in Heaven, where we can only imagine the joyous reunion.
To know Jim was to love him, and to lose him is an immeasurable loss. May his memory be a guiding light and his legacy a reminder of a life well lived.
