Janet Camper

March 25, 1938 — December 6, 2020

Janet met Thomas Ray Camper through mutual friends in her hometown of Kettering in the UK.  At the time, Tom was serving in the US Air Force stationed at Mildenhall AB.  They were married on July 20, 1957.

After spending several years in the UK, they moved to Bitburg AB, Germany (1963-1967).  In June 1967, they welcomed their first child Tamara Sue.

Tom and Janet’s next adventure took them to March AFB, Riverside CA (1967-1969).  While Tom was assigned to March AFB, he was deployed to Korea.  It was during Tom’s deployment that Janet obtained her US Citizenship.

Following his assignment to March AFB, Tom was reassigned to Offutt AFB in Bellevue NE (1969-1971).  During this assignment Tom served a tour in Vietnam.  Janet proudly supported her deployed husband and kept herself busy by working at the local thrift shop, helping her niece with her college studies, and raising their daughter.

Upon Tom’s return from Vietnam, Tom was reassigned to Norton AFB in San Bernardino, CA (1971-1974).  In December 1973, they welcomed their second child Jason Lee Camper.

In 1974, at the rank of Technical Sergeant, Tom was reassigned to Lowry AFB in Denver, CO (1974-1977). After faithfully supporting her husband for twenty years in the U.S. Air Force, Tom would retire. The two would make their permanent home in Aurora, CO that same year.

In June 1982, Janet entered her own career in Civil Service.  She was hired as a clerk for U.S. Army’s Denver Recruiting Battalion in the Advertising and Public Affairs office. After working for more than a year in the position, Janet was recognized for her hard work and dedication with a promotion to the Budget office where she worked as a Budget Analyst for the next twenty-eight years. She lost her husband of fifty-four years in March of 2000. She retired in December 2011 at the age of seventy-three.  During her tenure she was awarded Employee of the Quarter multiple times and was awarded the Department of the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service.

Janet was proud to have been a US Air Force spouse for 20 years. Her love for her husband, Tom, would endure forever. She was a proud, strong, and fiercely independent woman who knew what she wanted and was not afraid to speak her mind.

Janet and Tom were blessed with the arrival of their first Grandchild Morgan Sumner Stears September 6. 1992 and their second Trevor Sloan Stears December 6, 1994 born to Tamara Sue.

Education:  Secondary school (High School) and some Post-secondary (College) classes.

Hobbies: Janet had a strong love for shopping.  Her favorite store was Nordstrom’s.  Her love of shopping at the store lead her to some incredibly special and dear friendships.  Janet and Jason were regulars at all the parties and private sales for VIP shoppers.  She loved clothing and jewelry fashion.  Starbucks was a weekly tradition for Janet, her friend Linda and occasionally Gissel Linda’s granddaughter when she was younger.  Janet had an extensive collection of stuffed bears, a passion that was shared by Tamara.  Thimbles and nick knacks from all over also lined her shelves.  During her Air Force spouse years, she loved decorating cakes for her family and friends.

She is survived by daughter Tamara Sue (Camper) Buchanan and son in law David Bruce Buchanan; grandson Morgan Sumner Stears and granddaughter in law Erin (Gawthrop) Stears; grandson Trevor Sloan Stears; son Jason Lee Camper and daughter in law Vailey (Jestus) Camper
