Jay Thomas Gould

April 24, 1934 — October 10, 2013

Born April 24, 1934 in New York City to Julia (Walsh) and Jay Thomas Gould. Jay spoke fondly of his childhood. He made many great friends during his time at St. Margaret's Grammar School in Riverdale. He told stories of jumping cliffs at Spuyten Duyvil, watching many Yankee Games, and even seeing Jackie Robinson play. After Jay was honorably discharged from the Marines he started his career with Mercantile Stores. In 1954 he met Sheila Punch, whom he wed in 1956. They moved to Colorado in 1959 when Jay was transferred to work for Joslins Department Stores where he worked until 1994. After his retirement Jay spent time travelling with Sheila until her death in 2002. In 2004 Jay joined the Franciscan Friends of the Poor and lived with and served the homeless through Father Woody's Haven of Hope. Jay made many friends during this time including Marge Conner who he married in 2006. He continued his work with the homeless of Denver up until his illness. During his life Jay was an avid sports fan. He loved the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, The Denver Broncos, but mostly the New York Yankees. Jay was proud of the numerous pints of blood he donated through Bonfils Blood Bank. Of all of his accomplishments and gifts Jay's faith was most important. He lived by Matthew 25:35-40. Jay was preceded in death by his wife Sheila, his parents, daughter in law Lisa, brother in law Hugh McGeehan, and sister Dorothy Wertis. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Conner, sister Eva McGeehan, his children, Mike, Mary (Russ) Klein, Joe, Tom (Kim), Ann (Andy) Potarf, Sheila (Dave) Miller, and Liz (Eric) Andrews, his grandchildren Catherine, Jay (Emily), Danny, Maggie, Kyle, Joel, Kristin, Tim, Lizzie, Michael, Caitlin, Michael, Alex, Ben, Kylie, and John, his nieces and nephews, and his step children and step grandchildren. Jay and his family were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support he received during his illness. The family would especially like to thank the compassionate caring team at Porter Hospice. Horan McConaty is handling arrangements. A Rosary at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 355 S. Navajo St., on Tuesday at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10am.
