Jean Evelyn Groves

Jean Evelyn Steinman Groves, 85, died peacefully with family by her side on August 9th, 2015. Born November 1st, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska, Jean was the youngest of three daughters born to Oscar and Viola Steinman. She attended Benson High in Omaha, and received her bachelor of arts in education from the University of Omaha in 1951. While teaching elementary school, and supporting the USO during the Korean War, Jean met the love of her life, a young airman who was serving at Offutt Air Force Base. Jean and Charles Richard (Dick) Groves were married November 17, 1953. They had five children over the years. They lived in Nebraska, California, Indiana, Ohio, and finally moved to Colorado in 1977, where Dick joined the Engineering Faculty at the Colorado School of Mines. Dick and Jean designed and built their dream home with a view of the front range in Arvada. They were long time members of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where Jean was active in the Women's Circle. Jean was a talented artist, decorating the walls of their homes with murals and artwork everywhere they lived. Jean was very active in her church, and her artwork decorates numerous churches to this day. Jean's paintings were most recently shown in the Arvada Senior Center. Jean is survived by her children: Carrie, Gillian, Holly, and Brian Groves, four grandchildren: Heather Jurney, Lillian Wheeler, Amber and Anthony Groves, and three great-grandchildren: Michael Jurney III, Marc Anthony Reed Jr., and Xzavier Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband Dick, daughter Merial, and sisters Eleanor Smith and Marilee Allen. A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 13th 10am at Arvada Cemetery, 5581 Independence St., Arvada, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Foothills Animal Shelter, 580 McIntyre St., Golden, CO 80401.
