Jeanne (Grigg) Mill passed away on Tuesday, April 18 at her home in Denver surrounded by her children and her dedicated caregivers. She was 103 years old.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter Susan (Larry) Willard of Kiowa, Colorado and her son Dr. Michael (Michelle) Mill of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; her grandchildren Joshua Serlin; Isabella (William) Anlyan; Cassandra (Peter) Barteaux; Riley Mill; Emily Mill; her great-grandchild Elizabeth Barteaux; and several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces. Jeanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Walter C. Mill and their children Walter Mill, Jr. and Beverly Mill, as well as her three siblings Robert Grigg, Mary Elizabeth Duncan, and Wilma Fleming.
(Emma) Jeanne was born August 9, 1919 in Bridgeport, Illinois to Richard and Cecilia Grigg. She attended the Washington University School of Nursing at St. Louis, graduating with the class of 1945. Jeanne wed Walter on June 15, 1947, and the couple were married for 62 years. Jeanne and Walter moved to Denver, Colorado in 1949, where they had their four children. Jeanne was a tirelessly dedicated wife and mother.
Throughout her life, Jeanne was a committed community volunteer. She was an active member of her children’s Parent Teacher Associations during their school years, and served in the American Osteopathic Auxiliary and the Rocky Mountain Osteopathic Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Jeanne and Walter relocated to East Lansing, Michigan in 1977, where he accepted a position at Michigan State University; during their tenure at MSU Jeanne charitably hosted international students in their home and helped them learn English. After moving back to Denver in 2000 Jeanne volunteered at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music as an usher. She served as a 35-year member of P.E.O. in East Lansing Michigan and with Chapter BB of Denver, a Philanthropic Education Organization which supports women’s education. Jeanne was also an active member of the United Methodist Church.
Jeanne and Walter enjoyed travels around the world together and traveled regularly to visit family in the United States. Jeanne maintained prolific written correspondence with many family, friends, and international acquaintances throughout her life. She attended nursing school reunions through 2015. Jeanne was a consummate record keeper, bequeathing a treasure trove of family history and photographs to be cherished by generations of Mill’s. She was an avid bridge player. Jeanne was known by many for her quick wit and sharp fashion critiques.
Jeanne’s family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers from the Visiting Angels whose dedication over the last decade enabled her to live at home in comfort. We are thankful to Lisa Wood; Cindy Warsavage; Ronda Evans; Beth Holle; Eva Farkas and all the other dedicated teammates whose care was a blessing to Jeanne and her family.
A memorial service celebrating Jeanne’s life will be held Wednesday, April 26th at 11:00 am at Horan & McConaty located at 1091 S Colorado Blvd in Denver, Colorado 80246 followed by the burial at Crown Hill Cemetery located at 7777 W 29th Avenue in Lakewood, Colorado 80215. Relatives and friends are welcome.
