Jeremy Joseph Hoffmann

December 23, 1976 — September 18, 2017

Jeremy Joseph Hoffmann, 40, of Bend, Oregon, passed away on September 18th, 2017 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. With amazing blue eyes and a huge smile, Jeremy brought his personal drive, sense of fairness, and competitive nature to everything he undertook. He was a multiple-sport varsity letterman at Oswego High School, where he graduated in 1995. Then, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, a dream of his since age 10. After graduation, Jeremy was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, his first love. By 2010, Jeremy had completed four deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and earned the rank of Major. After returning from his final deployment, Jeremy was diagnosed with brain cancer and was honorably retired from the USMC. Undaunted, he spent the next several years in Denver. Despite ongoing cancer treatment and monitoring, Jeremy delivered “Meals on Wheels” to the elderly, completed a triathlon, and earned his MBA at the University of Denver. In 2013, he married Alma Lugtu, and their shared passion for travel took them all over the United States, as well as Italy, Greece, Mexico, and Israel. They also climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro together. In 2014, Jeremy was medically cleared to pursue another passion - flying helicopters. He and Alma moved to Bend, Oregon, where Jeremy became a certified helicopter and drone pilot, earning his degree with honors. In June 2016, just one month after Jeremy completed his flight programs, he was diagnosed with a different and aggressive form of brain cancer. Thankfully, during his final year, Jeremy was able to spend quality time with his family and friends, including watching the annual Army-Navy football game and a beach trip to Mexico. Jeremy is survived by his wife Alma and their dog “Ali”; his mother Rita Turner and stepfather Frank Turner; stepmother Jann Hawkins; and honorary parents Frank and Barbara Noonan. He also leaves behind two brothers and their wives: Adam and Kelli Hoffmann, and Nathan and Ralene Hoffmann. Jeremy is also survived by many loving aunts and uncles, and was a proud and loving uncle to nine nieces and nephews, an honorary uncle to many more children, and was a good and loyal friend to many cousins and countless buddies and brothers-in-arms around the world. Jeremy was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his father Jay Hoffmann, and several fallen comrades he held dear. Services will be held for Jeremy at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Lakewood, Colorado at 9:30am on Friday, September 29th, followed by interment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jeremy’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Fisher House Foundation.
