Joan Emilie Kilpatrick Sands, age 98, died peacefully on October 20, 2022. She was a graduate of Torrington High School and attended Scottsbluff Junior College and the Union Pacific Telegraphy School in Omaha, Nebraska. She met Henry Rogers Sands before he began his service in World War II. They married after he returned from his duty in the South Pacific.
Joan was willing to take risks and try new things. During the war she was a telegrapher with the Union Pacific Railroad working in small isolated stations. After the war, she and her husband lived on a farm in Nebraska. In the 1960s they moved to Denver, Co. She and her husband traveled to Europe and the Far East in conjunction with his business trips. She also enjoyed belonging to both the Adams Arapahoe Women’s Club and PEO, visiting friends, and hosting family gatherings.
She is survived by daughter, Cynthia Struck and son, Steven Sands, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Joyce. Those wishing to honor her life can make a donation in her name to Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.
