Joel Nelson Levitt was born August 1, 1950 to Helen (Hale) and Melvin Doyle Levitt in Sailor Springs, IL. He spent his youth growing up on the family farm with four siblings and large extended Levitt family. In 1968 he enlisted in the Unites States Air Force to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He held posts in Europe, the Pacific and stateside during his lengthy and distinguished military career. Upon retiring from the armed services he worked for the State of Colorado in service to Veterans and the homeless of Denver. Joel continued his work serving United States veterans through his involvement with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization. A lifelong advocate of political participation he volunteered with the Colorado Republican Party as Republican Precinct Committeeman. A true believer in the political process, Joel was never afraid to discuss politics and debate your opinion whether you agreed or not. He enjoyed an informed conversation and understanding different viewpoints from everyone he met. As a member of the congregation at St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church Joel was also deeply devoted to his religious beliefs. A lifelong follower of Christ who always helped his fellow man. He freely spoke of his dedication to the Lord who was profoundly grateful for his blessed life. A nearly fatal tractor accident at the age of 16 left him with the understanding he was saved by a miracle. He was well aware of what a fragile gift every day we have is here on earth. His generosity touched countless people who have acutely felt his loss. He is survived by a daughter Joellen Levitt and son Joshua Levitt with former wife Judy (Levitt) Gesumaria. Siblings are Cheryl Lynn Miller, Noel Thomas Levitt, Cecile Marie Huff, and Burcham Lee Levitt. He was dedicated to family and enjoyed researching genealogy in his retirement. His sudden departure from our lives makes the memories we have all that more special. Viewing and Sacraments will be Thursday February 25th 7:30PM at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church. The funeral service for Joel Levitt will be held Friday, February 26, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, Greenwood Village, Colorado. Funeral procession will follow to Ft. Logan National Cemetery where he will receive full military honors for his distinguished service.
