John Adams Carson

John Adams Carson passed away surrounded by his family September 29, 2017. John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gloria; children John K. (Eileen) Carson and Kerry (Carl) Oesterle and grandchildren Mackenzie Carson, Ainsley Carson, Logan Oesterle, Liam Carson and Gardner Oesterle. John was born to proud parents Dale Carson and Lillian George Carson. He grew up in Carrollton, Ohio alongside his twin brother Jim (James Dorrance Carson), and older brother Dale (Dale George Carson). John's mother Lillian held the family together following the death of their father, (a dentist by profession), in the midst of the Great Depression. John always looked up to his mother for providing great love and support during this time. The family was fortunate to be able to rely upon the help of the extended Carson and George families during John's formative years. Small town Eastern Ohio was Scots-Irish, Presbyterian country, and in later years John taught his family a love of history and genealogy, often recounting stories of his grandparents, great grandparents, and aunts and uncles. John played football at Carrollton High School and following graduation worked as a Groundsman for the Ohio Power Company. In 1951 and 1952, during the Korean Conflict, John served in the U.S. Army in Post War Occupied Germany. His brother Jim served at the same time in Korea, and his brother Dale had served in Italy during World War II. Following the Army, and due to the GI Bill, John attended college and graduated from Kent State University. He became a geologist and worked for Socony Mobil (later Mobil Oil Company) in locations such as Venezuela, and the New York City headquarters. It was in New York City that John met his future wife Gloria McCarthy at Mobil Oil Company. He enjoyed recounting the story of taking the elevator one day to the 30th floor of the Mobil Building and there at the reception desk sat his future wife Gloria, a ""Love Story"", as he called it. This was during the glamorous 1950's when they had a wonderful time exploring the city and enjoying locations such as Jones Beach. John and Gloria were married in January of 1959 at St. John's Methodist Church in New Rochelle, New York and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of over 58 years to the day of John's death. John and Gloria have two children, John K. Carson and Kerry Carson Oesterle. During John's early career at Mobil, John moved the family from the New York/ Connecticut area to Corpus Christi, Texas (1964-1975), and then to Lakewood, Colorado, where he retired from Mobil in the late 1980's. John was active with his family in the United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi and after moving to Colorado, at the Wheat Ridge United Methodist Church. John enjoyed sharing his knowledge of geology and also enjoyed wood working, often building pieces of furniture for the house. John had a second career at the EPA in the federal government where he used his expertise in oil wells to help ensure they were maintained and closed down in an environmentally safe manner. John enjoyed many wonderful retirement years at home and traveling with family to places such as Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia and throughout the U.S. John was blessed with five grandchildren; Mackenzie, Ainsley and Liam Carson, the children of his son John and his wife Eileen Carson; and Logan and Gardner Oesterle, the children of his daughter Kerry and her husband Carl Oesterle. He enjoyed visiting the Carson grandchildren in Colorado and traveling frequently to Oklahoma to visit the Oesterle grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 East County Line Road, Centennial, Colorado 80122, followed by a reception. Interment will be held at 2:30 PM, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Shelter ""B"", 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, CO 80236. Military Honors Rendered by the United States Army.
