John H. 'Gus' Gustafson

February 8, 1925 — February 17, 2012

John H. ""Gus"" Gustafson, 87 years of age, of Denver, Colorado, passed away on February 17, 2012. Born February 8, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri to Gunnard and Ethel Gustafson, he attended Kansas City schools and graduated from Central High School in 1943. During World War II, he served with E Company of the 161st Infantry Regiment, 25th Division, in the South Pacific and graduated from the University of Denver in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration. He also attended Bethany Lutheran College and was an alumnus of Gamma Kappa Alpha and a past president of the Mile High Chapter of Toastmasters International. Gus married Carolyn Waldorf of Denver, Colorado on August 21, 1948 and was employed by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Co. for 34 years, retiring at the age of 60 in November 1985 at the position of systems analyst. He is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn; a daughter Judy (Chris) Alexander; grandchildren Ingrid Ulbrich, Steve Ulbrich, Adam Alexander, Eric Alexander, and Michelle Alexander. He is also survived by many family members in Missouri. In addition to his parents, Gus is preceded in death by his brothers Harley and Robert of Kansas City, Missouri, and a sister Bernice Swanson of Overland Park, Kansas. A Visitation for Gus will be held on Thursday, February 23, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 South Colorado Boulevard, Denver, Colorado. A Funeral Service, with Pastor John Pederson presiding, will be held in Christ Chapel at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 E. Alameda Avenue, Denver, Colorado, at 1:00pm on Friday, February 24th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Denver Hospice, 501 S. Cherry Street, Suite 700, Denver, Colorado 80246 or to Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 E.
