John Alfred Humphreys III

John Alfred Humphreys M.D. John A Humphreys M.D, passed away Thursday July 6, 2017 at Holly Creek Christian Living Community; He was 91. John Alfred Humphreys III was born January 17, 1926 in Memphis, TN, to John and Mary Ann Humphreys. John moved to Denver, Colorado with his parents and sister in 1938. He attended East High School and upon graduation in 1944 entered the Army and was a Second Lieutenant and had been stationed in the Philippines. Upon his discharge from the Army, John attended Denver University and then attended the University of Colorado Medical School where he earned his Medical Degree (1953). He married Janet Elizabeth Hartley on August 31, 1952. She died April 20, 2016. John is survived by his three children, John (Debbie) Humphreys, Henderson, CO, Scott (Cathy) Humphreys, Littleton, CO, Gaye (Jim) Aaberg, Bloomington, IL; six grandchildren Dana (Kyle) Williams, Seth Humphreys, Kim (Ian) Trowell, Sarah (Patrick) Weeg, Jackson Aaberg, Champaign, IL, Grant Aaberg, Normal, IL. He has 5 great-grandchildren, Cade, Elianna, Levi, Grace and Lincoln. He had 2 step grandchildren Joseph Caldara, Denver, CO and Jeni Caldara, Longmont, CO. He has 3 nephews and 2 Nieces in California. Upon graduation from UC Med John, Jan and son John moved to Rangley, Colorado where John was general practitioner. He worked the western slope of Colorado caring for patients with emergency injuries, delivering babies, and overall encouraging healthy living. In 1958 John and his family moved back to Denver. John specialized in Ophthalmology. He opened a practice with friends, Duane Lahey and Rolland “Tommy” Thompson. He retired in 1989. In 1989 John was awarded the Silver & Gold Award from the CU School of Medicine. First awarded in 1969, this is the highest honor and recognition bestowed by the Medical Alumni Association. The Silver and Gold Award for Excellence in Humanitarianism, Citizenship and Professionalism is presented for outstanding service to the community and contributions to the science and art of medicine. John had great passion for his adopted state of Colorado and loved the great outdoors Colorado offers. John loved fly fishing along the many wonderful rivers, he learned to ski while in college and shared this great sport with his children. There wasn’t a golf course he didn’t love and had the great accomplishment of getting a hole in one at Arizona’s Wigwam Golf Resort. John loved his wife and family deeply, he was a good friend to so many, a mentor and passionate about his church, First Plymouth of which he was a member since 1947. The family will have a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at First Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 3501 South Colorado Blvd., Englewood, CO 80110.
