John Joseph McDonald of Denver, died peacefully on December 5, 2015, at age 93, following a vibrant life of accomplishment and commitment to family and community. Born and raised in Marshfield, WI, he attended St. Norbert College, and graduated from the US Military Academy in 1945. He lived a life of service exemplifying values of honor and country deepened at West Point. A member of the honor guard at the Hyde Park burial of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he served his country in Germany and at Fort Riley, KS, before settling in Denver with his beloved Margie (Margaret Lamb McDonald, his wife of 58 years, who predeceased him). A longtime life insurance agent, he earned a M.A. in public affairs in his 50's before being appointed as the Industrial Commissioner by Governor Richard Lamm. He actively volunteered, and was recognized with the Minori Yasui award for a life of service. Volunteerism included being a board member of the Listen Foundation and the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in direct service roles for Colorado Legal Services and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, among others. Devoted father (and fatherin-law) to Peggy (Frank Hamsher), Kathleen, Susan (Greg Geissler), Frances (Bob Pratte), John, and Maureen (David Baker), beloved grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of 11. Survived also by brothers Phil McDonald (Leta) of Denver and Jim McDonald (Rita) of Milwaukee, sister Mary Gorzalski (Ed) of New Bern, NC, and brother-in-law Emmet Lamb (Chalice) of Palm Desert. Preceded in death by his second wife Carol Young. John, (known to some as Mac, or Jack) was an avid Colorado hiker and skier, wide ranging traveler, storyteller, promoter of justice for the poor and marginalized, avid photographer, active Democrat, and lover of music. He was known by all for his wit and Irish humor. He was the hub of the family wheel and will be profoundly missed.
