John Michael "Big Mike" Pustek, 71, of Thornton, Colorado passed away at home on September 20, 2023. Mike is survived by sisters Stephanie (Sean) McManus and Sheila Stephens and multiple beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by parents John and Loretta Pustek, sister Charlotte, and brother Tommy. He grew up in rural Adam's County, attended Assumption Catholic Grade School and graduated from IC Ranum High School.
His fascination with taking things apart and putting them back together sparked his life-long interest in auto mechanics. He furthered his education at trade school, honing his skills as an ACT auto mechanic. An avid car buff, his enthusiasm for auto mechanics was shared with both family and friends. Learning to play the accordion at an early age brought bright openings for teasing and laughter in his later life, his "oom pah pah" accordion music contrasted with Mike's true appreciation of Frank Zappa, Johnny Cash, and Bluegrass music.
Mike loved to travel by car and exploring most of the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico. His rescued cat, Jiggy, gave him comfort and great cheer. His various careers included working as a lineman for Public Service, apprenticing as a submarine mechanic, truck driving, and an auto mechanic for the city of Thornton and Westminster. His strong work ethic brought him satisfaction especially when he worked as a truck driver and an ACT auto mechanic.
His friends, neighbors, and co-workers remember him as a good guy, always willing to lend a helping hand, assist in projects, providing stories to entertain, recounting amusing anecdotes to bring smiles, supporting many charitable organizations and being present to those dealing with difficult situations. Mike had a great sense of humor, was fun-loving, and fond of joking around.
Retirement was a golden opportunity to tinker; aka, take things apart and put them back together! He enjoyed car travel, reading, and visiting with friends, neighbors and family. His hobbies brought him joy. Retirement favored him with relaxation and time to unwind.
Friends and family are grief stricken at his loss; yet joyful that he is at peace. He remains in our hearts as a generous, hardworking, knowledgeable, easy-going man and a sold good guy.
