John (Jack) Mccaffery, Jr.

September 1, 1929 — December 2, 2021

Englewood

John Lawrence McCaffery, Jr. died on December 2, 2021 at his home in Englewood, Colorado surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on September 1, 1929, the only son of John L. and Grace Fay McCaffery. Known as Jack to anyone who knew him for more than thirty seconds, he grew up in Denver and worked for his father at the Cory Hotel while attending the University of Denver. It is while working the front desk of the Cory Hotel that he met the love of his life, Barbara Jane Groves. They were married in her hometown, Wray, Colorado on October 24, 1953, shortly before Jack was sent to France by the U.S. Army. Upon his return to Denver in 1955 Jack moved into his boyhood home in Park Hill and started the first of several food service businesses he owned during his life. In his “spare time” between starting his business and raising a family he obtained his Private Pilot’s License.

By 1964 Jack, Barbara Jane and their three children (Tom, Joe and Mary Jane) had outgrown their home. So, in November 1964 Jack and Barbara Jane moved their growing family from Park Hill to a much larger residence in Cherry Hills Village. Shortly after moving into their new home, Jack and Barbara Jane caught the sailing “bug.” They cruised their two sailboats up and down the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas for many years and, despite selling their beloved “Fourviews” in the 1990s, they never really cured themselves of the sailing “bug.” They lived and loved in their home on Oxford Lane until Barbara Jane’s untimely death in August 1995.

In 1996 Jack sold the family home and moved into a somewhat smaller home a short distance away. From his final home he spent the rest of his life socializing, traveling, working on his collection of antique cars and raising herds of English Mastiffs. However, his special focus for the last twenty-five years of his life was helping to raise, and occasionally terrorize, his seven grandchildren, (Jon, Fay, Miles, Heather, James, Grace, and Patrick).

The burial service and reception will be held at Horan & McConaty, 5303 E. County Line Road, Centennial, CO 80122, on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
