Born to Robert and Ruth McGuire and delivered by his Grandfather Doctor John McGuire in Neodesha on October 28th, 1938. Jon died of the Coronavirus on August 1st, 2020. He graduated from Neodesha High School in 1956 where he was an outstanding athlete. All League pass catching and his teammates voted him as the most outstanding defensive player. Charles Winfrey, a stellar running back on that team tells an amusing story of a time when Charley was streaking down the sidelines heading for the end zone. Suddenly Jon pulls up beside him. He tells Jon not to try a block. "I've got this" Charley says. Jon replies, "I'm not blocking. "Looking to get my picture in the paper".
Jon was an avid reader and kept a collection of books. His favorite subjects were Thomas Jefferson and Joan of Arc. He visited Monticello and toured Joan of Arc relics in Paris....including paintings of her at The Louvre and the Pantheon. He attended Washburn College and later joined the United States Air Force. After leaving the service he went into the insurance business and spent his entire working life working as an underwriter, field man, and branch manager, the last 15 years with Travelers of St. Paul. He worked in Missouri, California and Indiana. After retirement he moved to Centennial, CO.
He is survived by three children, Patrick, Stephanie, and Christopher. A Brother Joe and Nephews and nieces. Cousins John McGuire of Overland Park, Kansas and Mary Hedscock of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Niece Karen of Sacramento and Nephew Joe McGuire Jr. of Sparks, Nevada were especially close to him. Preceding him in death were his parents and second wife Noreen.
A cremation will take place and interment will be at the Neodesha Cemetery in Kansas.
