In Memoriam: Remembering the Life of a Remarkable Man, Jon Riley Ruby
It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Jon Ruby, a beloved father, brother, coach, and friend. Jon's journey began in Danbury, Nebraska, where he was born, but it was in Tecumseh, Nebraska, that he embarked on the incredible adventure that was his life. After spending most of his life in the Denver area, Jon's story came to an end on December 3rd, 2023.
Jon's love for sports and education was evident from the very beginning. He graduated from Peru State College in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, showcasing his athletic prowess by excelling in both basketball and football, earning himself a spot on the All-Conference team. Later, he furthered his education, obtaining a master's degree from Colorado Teachers College (now the University of Northern Colorado) in 1969, specializing in Physical Education.
After a brief stint coaching basketball and football, Jon found his true calling as the head boys' swimming coach at Adams City High School in Commerce City, Colorado. For over 25 years, he dedicated himself to nurturing young talent, and his hard work paid off with the development of two All-American swimmers. By running youth age swimming programs around Denver his impact extended beyond the high school pool. He also shared his knowledge as a history teacher and Driver's Ed instructor, leaving an indelible mark on his students' lives. After retirement he spent many years refereeing swimming.
Jon was not only a sports enthusiast but also an avid outdoorsman. He cherished days spent waterskiing, skiing down the slopes, and teeing off on the golf course. His interest in history led to a wealth of knowledge, and he often immersed himself in books to satisfy his intellectual curiosity.
Although Jon had a tough exterior, he had a heart of gold. He was a loving and reliable father to his sons, Erik of Castle Rock and Kurt Ruby of Highlands Ranch, always ensuring that he spent quality time with them and spoiling them whenever he had the chance. His imposing size and toughness may have intimidated some, but those who knew him best recognized the gentle, sensitive soul within.
Jon is survived by his sons, Erik and Kurt, his sister, Rebecca Cast of Lincoln, and his cherished granddaughters, Keely, Shaye, and Mandi Ruby. He leaves behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and love that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we say our goodbyes to Jon Ruby, let us remember the warmth of his smile, the wisdom of his words, and the laughter he brought into our lives. His memory will forever shine brightly in our hearts, reminding us to live life to the fullest, just as he did. In celebrating his life, we also find solace, knowing that he is now reunited with loved ones who have gone before him.
Rest in peace, dear Jon. You may be gone, but your spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by your kindness, strength, and indomitable spirit.
