Jonathan Dwaine Lockmon

March 21, 1970 — December 13, 2005

Jonathan Dwaine Lockmon fought a valiant battle with cancer for 4 years, and on December 13, 2005, he quietly passed on while a friend sang 'I'll Fly Away'. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in February of 2002, and even though he met a mountain of challenges, he never gave up. His motto was, 'I Will Die Living'. He had a note in his journal, 'If you are not living on the edge, you are not living.' His 35 years of life were filled with many trips to his beloved mountains, trips to Rome and London, trips to see a friend compete in the Ironman Triathalon. Even though Jon could not compete, he wanted to be there to cheer his buddy on. Jon was born on March 21, 1970 to Glenn and Sharon Lockmon in Denver, Colorado. Survirors are his parents, sister Libbie (Dean) Miller and neices Aimee and Morgan and nephew Aaron. He is also survived by his dogs Allie and Brinkley (who he recently rescued). Jon loved the mountains and in 1999 purchased an old house that was yellow in color. He became known in Pine as 'Jon Yellowhouse'. Many happy memories were created there, and the Yellowhouse was especially a wonderful place for reflection and healing. Summertime was a time of the Yellowhouse parties that were opportunities to raise money for charities that Jon championed. In his short 35 years he met some very special people that he patterned his life after. He met Pope John Paul several years ago at the Vatican, and just a year ago, Jon met Lance Armstrong at the Tour of Hope here in Denver. Lance Armstrong so inspired him that he watched the Tour de France every possible moment. Jon always wore a LiveStrong bracelet! Jon's activities were always 'extreme'. He loved to rock climb and go 4-wheeling in Moab, loved to run in road races, and most of all he loved bicycling. Even while ill, he would ride his bike 'in place' while Lance was riding in the Tour de France! While in high school he ran cross country and wrestled for Bear Creek High School. Jon graduated from Metro State College in 1993 and was fortunate to have already been hired by the State of Colorado, Department of Youth Services, Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center. He spent 13 years there until he medically retired in July of 2005. At the time of his retirement he was the Training Coordinator. He passed away peacefully at the Porter Hospice at the Johnson Center while surrounded by family and many friends. Memorials are being designated for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Porter Hospice Foundation; please designate for Jon Lockmon.
